Causes of Headache

Tension headaches can be triggered for a variety of reasons. Some of the more common causes are:

Caffeine: this causes blood vessels to dilate, which increases tension around the head. A recommendation is to try to limit your coffee intake to at most 2 cups per day.
Tyramine: this is a compound that is suspected of causing headaches in some people. Foods that are high in tyramine include chocolate, smoked/cured meat, doughnuts, breads, sugar, yogurt, caffeine, and red wine.
Chewing Gum: the repetitive chewing motion can lead to tension headaches since it causes your muscles to tighten.
Bright lights: this can lead to squinting and eyestrain, which then leads to a tension headache. Try to wear sunglasses when outdoors, and take regular breaks if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen.
Stress: this is a leading cause of both tension headaches and migraines. Try to reduce stress levels using deep breating or Yoga.

Migraine Headache Home Treatment

Dip henna flowers in vinegar and rub them against the forehead for quick migraine pain relief.
Make a fine paste of cinnamon by mixing it with water. Apply it over the temples and forehead to get relief from migraine headaches caused by exposure to cold air.
Take boiling water in a large bowl and add a handful of rosemary to it. Cover your head with a towel, lean over the bowl and inhale the steam. Continue inhaling the steam for 5 to 10 minutes for migraine relief.
A cup of chamomile tea taken just after feeling the symptoms of migraine can prevent headache from becoming severe.
Eat 10-12 almonds to cure migraine headache. Nuts contain the vitamin niacin that is helpful in relieving migraine pain. Other sources of this vitamin are yeast, whole wheat, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, liver and fish.
Take juice prepared from carrot, spinach, beet and cucumber. Take 300 gms of carrot and 100 gms of other vegetables to make the juice.
Take fresh grape juice. Simply grind fresh, ripe grapes and drink the juice directly without adding any water.
Take 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds powder and three teaspoons water. Put the mixture in the nostrils or just smell it for getting relief from migraine headache.
Take few leaves of the cabbage and crush them. Place the crushed cabbage in a cloth and bound on the forehead at bedtime, or at any convenient time during the day. Renew the compress when leaves dry out.
Make fine paste of crusts of lemon in a mortar. Apply this paste on the forehead. It is an effective migraine cure.
Tie a tight cloth around the head to decrease blood flow to the scalp and lessen the throbbing and pounding of migraine headache.
Do not take heavy and spicy food stuff. Avoid chocolate, aged cheese, red wine, citrus fruits. These foods contain tyramine or other histamines which are considered to cause migraines in people with food sensitivities. If possible, switch to Ayurvedic diets according to your body type.
Take a nap. Sleeping relaxes muscles and bring body systems in order. Taking a nap when headache has just begun or when symptoms are being shown may prevent severe headaches.

Symptoms of Migraine

Migraine has also been referred to as a neurovascular headache due to the fact that one aspect of migraine development involves changes in the chemistry and diameter of the blood vessels that provides blood to the brain and the nerves in the neck and head.

How does migraine occur?

The common belief is that the sequence of occurrence of the migraine headache pains is as follows:

1 . First the blood vessels surrounding the brain becomes dilated and starting pressing on the adjacent nerves. It is still a mystery though on exactly how and why these blood vessels dilate although it seems that there is some form of chemical signal that is activating the pain sensors in the trigeminal nerve that runs from a location near the skull center, up and over the eyes and then towards the forehead.

2 . These stimulated nerve fibers then release fragments of proteins, known as neuropeptides, which cause the swelling and inflammation of the blood vessels.

3. The expansion of the blood vessels irritates the trigeminal nerve further, like a vicious cycle, resulting in the migraine headache pain.

Symptoms of migraine

A migraine attack typically goes through four distinct phases where the migraine sufferers will encounter certain migraine symptoms for each phase.

Prodrome phase

General symptoms experienced in the prodrome phase, also known as the preheadache phase, includes irritability, increased yawning, fatigue, mood swings and food cravings.

Aura phase

About 15% of migraine sufferers can experience an aura before the development of the migraine headache. Symptoms experienced are weakness or numbness on one side of the body, visual disturbances such as seeing blind spots and flashing lights, slurred speech and sensitivity to sound and light.

Headache phase

The migraine headache phase can usually last between 4 to 72 hours and is considered to be the most scary and painful phase. The symptom encountered is a throbbing headache where in about 60% of the cases, the headache occurs on only one side of the head. Other associated symptoms experienced includes diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness and tinnitus.

Postdrome phase

The postdrome phase is when the pain and other associated symptoms have resolved and most of the time the migraine sufferer just feel like wanting to be left alone. Common symptoms encountered in this phase are surge in energy, increased appetite, euphoria, fatigue and confusion.

Not all migraine sufferers will go through all the four phases though. An example is a person who is suffering from migraine without aura, will completely skip the aura phase during the migraine attack. How long do tramadol withdrawal symptoms last?
I stopped using tramadol cold turkey (after heavy use for about a month) about 3 and a half weeks ago and I have no more actual “withdrawals” but I still feel severly depressed. I was not nearly this depressed before I started using tramadol. The week after I stopped I had thoughts of suicide, the depression was so bad. So how much longer is this depression supposed to last?

Anyone have any insight on this?

Tramadol is an opiate painkiller that is a derivative of heroin. It is a very difficult addiction to break, which is why so many people stay hooked. I’m not saying you are addicted, but it sounds like physically you were dependent upon the drug.

The acute withdrawal usually lasts no more than a week, but mentally can last much longer. There is what is called PAW (post acute withdrawal) which for long-term users can last up to a year. Since you were only using a month, I would say you should start feeling better very soon.

Basically you are flooding your system with a drug that makes you feel good. Your body gets used to it and needs it to feel normal. When you remove that, things get thrown out of whack.
